Brian Kemp speaks to voters during a campaign stop at Williamson Brothers Bar-B-Q on November 3, 2022 in Marietta, Georgia. When Kemp refused to overturn Biden’s 2020 win in Georgia, Trump demonized him and recruited former Sen. David Perdue to challenge Kemp in the 2022 GOP gubernatorial primary. Kemp also testified last year before the Atlanta-area special grand jury probing efforts by Trump to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia. Trump said Wednesday night that he wouldn't sign the pledge to support whoever the Republican nominee is because "I can name three or four people that I wouldn’t support for president." Despite that, Kemp recently told CNN he will “certainly” endorse the 2024 Republican nominee, even if it is Trump.

Two grand juries were empaneled last month in Fulton County Superior Court, either of which could be used by Willis to seek criminal charges related to her election probe. "I challenged the election in Georgia, which I have every right to do, which I was right about, frankly," Trump told the crowd. It's "all about election interference," Trump said before repeating his false claim that his 2020 election loss was tainted by widespread fraud. The defense lawyers on Tuesday asked a judge to delay a hearing on the protective order until next week. Trump claimed that the protective order was an attempt to stifle his free speech.

These wins are poised to threaten GOP competitiveness in key states like Georgia and Wisconsin in 2024 and beyond. And Biden won Athens-Clarke with a whopping 70%-28% victory, posting a nearly 22,000-vote margin over Trump. In 2016, Trump won Wisconsin by less than 1 percent of the vote. In 2000, Gore won Wisconsin by less than 6,000 votes (48.8%-48.6%) and won Dane by nearly 67,000 votes (61%-33%) over Bush. The Georgia Supreme Court on Monday unanimously dismissed a longshot bid by former President Donald Trump to quash the special grand jury report that recommended criminal charges in the Fulton County district attorney's probe of Georgia's 2020 election. The state Supreme Court also rejected Trump's request that it bar Fulton DA Fani Willis from continuing to oversee the criminal investigation. And the identities of more than a dozen people who the special grand jury recommended be prosecuted remain secret. And, as they did in their petition in Fulton County court, the lawyers argued that the evidence compiled by the special grand jury in the election probe was "unlawfully obtained." The special grand jury heard evidence and testimony from dozens of witnesses last year, but it did not have the power to return indictments.

But one of these panels is expected to be tasked later this summer with deciding whether to approve indictments in the Trump investigation. If there is a true bill, that creates a criminal case,” McBurney said, explaining the grand jury process. McBurney oversaw the special grand jury that previously collected evidence in the Trump investigation. To secure an indictment in the Trump investigation, 16 of the 23 voting grand jury members would need to be present. At the same time, Trump tried to weaponize the Justice Department to help him intervene in the Georgia election.

The problem was exacerbated when late-season cold temperatures swept across the Southeast. “Georgia peach crop was significantly affected by two late frosts in March,” Pearson Farms, a large producer of the fruit, said on their website. “Even a typical spring freeze can damage commercial and backyard fruit crops that have been pushed into blooming by late-winter warmth,” Rippey said. Peach plants are harvested once a year and take three to four years after planting before they are mature enough to be harvested, Chavez said. In his 10 years in the state, he said he has not seen this much of the crop lost, but noted that nearly 80% of the peach crop was lost after the spring freeze in 2017.

Most people recall the “Access Hollywood” tape of Trump using vulgar language to argue that “stars” can grab women. It also adds his Bedminster club to the potential locations where Trump had classified documents after leaving office. In response to the report, a Trump campaign spokesman said “leaks” are meant to “inflame tensions” around Trump. (The document Trump references was not produced by Milley, CNN was told.) Besides the ongoing investigations into the aftermath of the 2020 election, here’s what else is looming over Trump.

LUBBOCK, Texas, May 27 (Reuters) - The Texas House is scheduled to vote on Saturday whether to impeach state Attorney General Ken Paxton, a conservative firebrand and ally of former President Donald Trump who has been accused by his fellow Republicans of abuse of office. If impeached, Paxton would be removed from office pending a trial in the Senate, where his wife, Angela Paxton, is a senator. A two-thirds Senate vote is needed to permanently expel him. The five-member Texas House General Investigating Committee voted unanimously on Thursday to recommend that Paxton be impeached and removed from office. The impeachment articles also allege Paxton engaged in bribery when Paul hired a woman with whom Paxton was having an extramarital affair.
CNN —Former President Donald Trump, the frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination, will take questions from New Hampshire Republicans and undeclared voters in a CNN town hall Wednesday as myriad legal issues loom over his 2024 White House bid. New Hampshire, home to the first-in-the-nation GOP primary, is also home to many swing voters. That’s a view many GOP voters share, according to recent surveys. Ron DeSantis, has not yet officially launched a bid – Trump has maintained a healthy lead in early GOP primary polling. Wednesday’s live town hall audience will be made up of Republicans and undeclared voters who plan to vote in the GOP primary.
CNN —Lawyers representing David Shafer, the embattled chairman of the Georgia Republican Party, are arguing their client should not be charged with any crimes for his actions following the 2020 election because he was following advice provided by attorneys working for former President Donald Trump, according to a letter sent to Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis last week. Willis has indicated she is seriously weighing bringing racketeering and conspiracy charges in connection with Trump’s actions in the Peach State around the 2020 election. Willis had previously notified all 16 GOP fake electors in Georgia that they were targets in her investigation. Other Republicans who served as pro-Trump electors, including Shafer, could still face legal exposure in her investigation, according to people familiar with the matter. Investigators have at least three recordings of Trump pressuring Georgia officials, including a phone call that he made to the Georgia House speaker to push for a special legislative session to overturn Democrat Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in the state.
The first scene of his reelection announcement video released last month showed smoke rising over the US Capitol and rioters with Trump flags. The legal complications facing Trump and GarlandGiven the fraught situation, the Justice Department’s next moves will be hugely significant. Thursday’s Proud Boys convictions are among the most significant of hundreds of successful Justice Department prosecutions of people linked to the US Capitol riot. So while a prosecution of Trump and his closest political associates over January 6 could be tough, it may not be impossible. So for now, at least with GOP primary voters, what doesn’t convict Trump, makes him stronger.
Opinion | A Hot Mess in the Georgia Republican Party

At what point does this party become mostly a bastion of wingnuts, spiraling into chaos and irrelevance? Just cast your eyes upon Georgia, one of the nation’s electoral battlegrounds, where the state Republican Party has gone so far down the MAGA rabbit hole that many of its officeholders — including Gov. The backstory: Some Republican incumbents took offense last year when the Georgia G.O.P.’s Trump-smitten chairman, David Shafer, backed Trump-preferred challengers in the primaries. (Mr. Trump, you will recall, was desperate to unseat several Republicans after they declined to help him steal the 2020 election.) “That’s a burn that’s hard to get over,” says Brian Robinson, a Republican strategist who served as an adviser to former Gov.
Donald Trump recently said he'd love to see GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene run for Senate. The last three Senate hopefuls Trump has backed in Georgia have lost six straight contests. Current Senate campaign chair Gary Peters is confident Greene would also fall short. Warnock looked rather incredulous as Insider asked for his opinion about Trump's show of support for a Greene senate bid. That's exactly the right attitude to take, Democratic strategist Rodell Mollieneau told Insider.

Georgia and Florida are prosperous neighboring states with GOP Governors and legislatures. But the Sunshine State is far ahead on school choice for students, and it may expand that lead this month if Peach State Republicans fumble on the issue. Florida has long been a leader on K-12 choice, vying with Arizona to offer the most expansive options in the nation. On Thursday Florida caught up with Arizona’s universal education savings account program by making its existing school choice offerings available to any student in the state. The state Senate voted 26-12 for the bill.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp told The Wall Street Journal he won't run for the White House in 2024. Kemp, who was reelected to a second term last fall, said he was keeping "an open mind" on the GOP field. Kemp's endorsement in swing state Georgia could be a boon to the eventual Republican nominee. So I'm kind of like everybody else, I'm just seeing how things are playing out and keeping an open mind," he added.
A judge in Georgia is set to publicly disclose on Thursday portions of a special grand jury's final report on its investigation into possible election interference by former President Donald Trump and his allies. Those sections "are ripe for publication" because they don't identify any witnesses, McBurney said in an order Monday. The full report will include recommendations on whether anyone should face criminal charges related to the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. "Having reviewed the final report, the undersigned concludes that the special purpose grand jury did not exceed the scope of its prescribed mission," McBurney wrote in Monday's order. Georgia was one of several key swing states that narrowly voted for President Joe Biden, then the Democratic nominee, over Trump in the 2020 presidential election.
Kemp told the outlet that Trump "didn't do a good enough job of telling people what he had done." Kemp, who was inaugurated to a second term this week, has been floated as a potential 2024 presidential contender. Brian Kemp of Georgia for not helping him overturn now-President Joe Biden's victory in the Southern swing state in the 2020 election. "President Trump and his reelection didn't do a good enough job of telling people what he had done and what he wanted to do in a second term," the governor told the outlet. Trump, who lost to Biden in the 2020 presidential election, has continued to allege that voter fraud was the culprit behind his ejection from the White House.
The National Association of Realtors named Atlanta the city to watch in 2023. While the national housing market is cooling, it's still thriving in Georgia's capital. Jay Martino, a barber who moved to Atlanta from Charleston, South Carolina. These factors will help Atlanta withstand the headwinds buffeting the national market, which is reeling after skyrocketing home prices and interest rates put home purchases out of reach. The trend suggests the local housing market can outperform the rest of the country in 2023, according to the National Association of Realtors.

She then rebuffed White House condemnations of her comments by insisting she was joking. Smith has also issued a flurry of grand jury subpoenas since Thanksgiving, including to ex-Trump adviser Stephen Miller and two former White legal counsels. A judge on Monday formally dismissed Trump’s case challenging the Mar-a-Lago evidence collection and in which she had appointed a special master. If a moment of truth is approaching for Trump, the same can be said of Garland and the DOJ. Trump has already tried to use claims that justice is being weaponized against him as rocket fuel for his 2024 presidential bid.
GOP consultants hired a law firm to conduct research on Walker before his Senate run, per NBC News. The firm compiled a 500-page dossier on Walker, which contained potentially problematic issues. Walker and his wife believed that his goodwill among Georgians would blunt negative attacks on him. But Walker and his current wife, Julie Blanchard Walker, weren't discouraged by the report. The result made Walker the only statewide Republican candidate to lose their race in Georgia this year.
Kellyanne Conway last week criticized GOP senators who didn't stump for Republican Herschel Walker. "Where were the other senators to say, 'I want Herschel Walker, not Raphael Warnock in the Senate with me?'" In last month's general election, Warnock edged out Walker 49.4%-48.5% statewide, which triggered a runoff as neither candidate hit the requisite 50% of the vote to declare victory. Warnock on Tuesday won the runoff over Walker 51.4%-48.6%. I don't like it because it's not Election Day, it's election season, election trimester.
